A PHOTOSHOOT FOR CONFIDENCE
A lot has changed for women over the last twenty years or so.
More women than ever before are being portrayed in a more powerful way than ever before in the media.
I remember being enthralled and excited by Thelma and Louise rediscovering their freedom, I remember the first femme fatale’s in ‘The Last Seduction’ and ‘Long Kiss Goodnight’ (A kind of ‘Bourne Again’ for women). Now the movies have many more powerful women and now a new generation of girls are growing up with powerful female role models.
I remember how Dita Von Teese shifted boundaries and pop icons like Beyonce and Rhianna changed the rules regarding control of their lives in male dominated industries. (Of course, with the bar set by Madonna who beat almost every man at his own game )
We read that more women are making films, music, writing best sellers, than ever before. (Does anyone outsell J K Rowling?)
Even pornography, statistics tell us, is watched and made by more women than ever before, and is on the rise significantly.
Our favorite lingerie companies, Honey Birdette and Agent Provocateur is aimed squarely at the female buying market, yet using far more aggressive imagery than in the past. The implication is that women are now more powerful, more confident and more in control than ever before.
Certainly, we are seeing more female entrepreneurs and managers than ever in our studios but it’s also the case that the single biggest group of women we see on a daily basis is women who want to regain self confidence. Women who have lost confidence in themselves over the years and need a boost.
Why is this?
We believe women lose confidence for one of a number of reasons.
Relationship Break Down – When a relationship breaks down or is abusive, this can have a significant impact on self confidence. You can feel ‘ugly’ or ‘not good enough’. The effects can be even more damaging if the relationship was a long term one.
Becoming a Mum – This remarkable time in any woman’s life is also one of the most common periods that women lose their sense of self worth. Years putting herself second (or third or fourth) in the household can really take its toll.
Illness – We meet so many women who have suffered from long term illness which can be devastating for self confidence.
Loss of Job – Especially this year when jobs seem to be falling like dominos. Self worth can hit rock bottom when it’s hard to put food on the table. So many of us define ourselves through our jobs.
Changing body shape – As we get older it’s completely normal for our bodies to change. Everything seems to drop to the floor!
The pressures of the Media – It doesn’t help that beautiful supermodels are staring at us everywhere and this inevitably leads to daily comparisons. Is it any wonder we come up short next to a Victoria Secret Model?
